Essential oils are volatile substances produced from various plant parts such as: seeds, leaves, fruits, flowers, resins, and woods. A certain oil is called "essential" in the sense that it holds the essence of the plant's fragrance or aroma from which it is obtained. These oils are mainly produced through distillation. They have therapeutic and healing properties which make them vital in aromatherapy.

 

Aromatherapy is defined as the art and science of using aromatic plant compounds aimed to harmonize the physical body, mind and spirit. It is a type of alternative medicine that greatly uses varied essential oils to promote health & well being. It attempts to boost the body’s natural healing process by integrating the physiological, psychological and spiritual processes. Thereby attaining of what is called a “holistic” approach to healing or therapy.

 

Aromatherapy however, must be kept in mind that this form of cure to help ease medical conditions should be seen as complementary or alternative treatment to modern medicine. It is not a replacement of conventional medicine which employs the use of synthetic drugs and surgeries for treatment, unless so applied by a licensed medical practitioner.
